— What We Do

What Does a Dietitian Do?

Our accredited practising dietitians provide personalised, evidence-based nutrition assessments and meal planning tailored to your health conditions, lifestyle and goals. We go beyond generic dietary advice — taking the time to understand your full health picture and create practical, sustainable strategies that actually work for you.

Personalised Nutrition Assessments

A thorough review of your current diet, health history, lifestyle and goals to identify nutritional gaps and build a clear plan tailored specifically to you.

Chronic Disease Nutrition Management

Specialised dietary support for managing conditions including diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and high cholesterol — coordinated directly with your GP and specialist team.

Weight Management Support

Sustainable, realistic strategies for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight — grounded in evidence, free from fad diets and designed around your individual needs and preferences.

Medicare Rebates Available

With a GP referral and Chronic Disease Management Plan, eligible patients can access Medicare rebates on dietitian consultations. Our team helps you navigate this from your very first visit.

What Is a Dietitian?

A dietitian is a university-trained, government-regulated health professional who specialises in food, nutrition and their impact on health. Unlike nutritionists, accredited practising dietitians (APDs) are qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy — meaning they work directly with your health conditions, medications and clinical data to design dietary interventions that are safe, targeted and effective.

At 1st Health Hub in Melbourne, our dietitians take a realistic, non-judgemental approach to nutrition. We understand that eating well looks different for everyone — and that sustainable change comes from working with your preferences, your culture and your lifestyle, not against them. Whether you are managing a complex health condition, navigating gut issues, recovering from illness or simply wanting to improve your energy and wellbeing, our dietitians provide the tools, knowledge and ongoing support you need.

As part of our fully integrated health centre, our dietitians work hand in hand with GPs, psychologists, exercise physiologists and other allied health professionals. This means your nutrition care is never considered in isolation — it is coordinated as part of your whole-health picture, leading to more effective outcomes and a care experience that genuinely feels connected.

Our team is happy to help. Give us a call or send us a message and we will get back to you promptly.

Do I need a GP referral to see a dietitian?

You do not need a referral to book directly with our dietitian. However, if you have a chronic health condition, your GP may prepare a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan that can entitle you to Medicare rebates for a number of allied health visits per calendar year, including dietetics. Our on-site GPs can help you with this in the same visit.

In Australia, Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are university-qualified, meet strict national standards and are trained to provide medical nutrition therapy for health conditions. The title “nutritionist” is not regulated in the same way — anyone may use it. For clinical nutrition advice linked to your medical care, an APD is the appropriate professional.

This depends on your goals, health conditions and how much support you need. Some people benefit from a few visits; others with complex or chronic conditions may see their dietitian regularly over months. Your dietitian will outline a realistic review schedule after your initial assessment.
