— What We Do

What Does an Exercise Physiologist Do?

Our accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) are university-trained allied health professionals who specialise in the design and delivery of exercise programs for people managing injury, chronic disease, disability or mental health conditions. Using clinical assessment and evidence-based exercise prescription, we help you improve your physical function, manage your condition and achieve sustainable health outcomes — safely and effectively.

Clinical Exercise Assessments

A thorough evaluation of your current physical capacity, health history, movement quality and goals to build a precise, personalised exercise program tailored to your condition and lifestyle.

Chronic Disease Exercise Management

Structured exercise therapy for managing diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis and other chronic conditions — coordinated with your GP and specialist team for safe, effective outcomes.

Injury Rehabilitation and Prevention

Evidence-based exercise programs to support recovery from injury, surgery or musculoskeletal conditions — rebuilding strength, mobility and function while reducing the risk of re-injury.

Medicare and NDIS Rebates Available

Eligible patients can access Medicare rebates through a GP Chronic Disease Management Plan or NDIS funding. Our team helps you identify and access the right support from your very first visit.

What Is an Exercise Physiologist?

An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) is a university-qualified, AHPRA-registered allied health professional who specialises in clinical exercise prescription for people living with chronic, complex or recurring health conditions. Unlike a personal trainer, an exercise physiologist is a regulated healthcare provider trained to work with medical diagnoses, medications and co-existing health conditions — designing exercise interventions that are clinically safe, targeted and evidence-based.

At 1st Health Hub in Melbourne, our exercise physiologists take a whole-person approach to movement and health. We understand that exercise looks and feels different for everyone — particularly for those managing pain, chronic illness or recovery from injury. That is why every program we design is built around your specific condition, current fitness level, daily routine and long-term health goals. Our focus is not on pushing limits — it is on building sustainable habits that genuinely improve your quality of life.

As part of our fully integrated health centre, our exercise physiologists work closely with GPs, physiotherapists, dietitians, psychologists and specialists. This collaborative model means your exercise therapy is never delivered in isolation — it is coordinated as part of a broader care plan, ensuring every element of your treatment works together for the best possible outcome.

Health and Physical Conditions

Diabetes and Metabolic Conditions

Exercise is one of the most powerful tools for managing Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Our exercise physiologists design safe, effective programs to improve insulin sensitivity, blood glucose control and cardiovascular health.

Heart Disease and Cardiovascular Conditions

Structured cardiac rehabilitation and preventive exercise programs for patients with heart disease, hypertension or high cholesterol — developed in coordination with your GP and cardiac specialist.

Musculoskeletal Injury and Chronic Pain

Rehabilitation programs for back pain, neck pain, joint conditions and post-surgical recovery — focused on restoring strength, mobility and function while effectively managing persistent pain.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Exercise has well-established benefits for anxiety, depression and stress. Our exercise physiologists work alongside our psychology team to integrate movement as a key component of mental health treatment plans.

Osteoporosis and Falls Prevention

Evidence-based strength and balance training to improve bone density, reduce fall risk and support independence — particularly important for older adults and those with osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Cancer Rehabilitation and Chronic Fatigue

Carefully structured exercise programs for patients undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment, or managing chronic fatigue syndrome — designed to rebuild energy, strength and confidence safely and progressively.
